Very interesting thread.
![]() Mike, we do know that some of these mass produced Chinese Ebikes have questionable quality control, so I'm not sure if Stewart adding any disclaimers to his ad would change the fact that a certain small number of them may be unsafe or perhaps even hazardous at 32km let alone 70km. It's up to the rider to check the bike over regularly and yes, inspect those welds before attempting any mods. I managed to upgrade my Gio to 60V and finally shunt modded the controller (with some initial hesitation on my part) only to find out the braking wasn't quite up to snuff. I didn't intend to admonish Gio for this although I felt the brakes were a bit dodgy even at stock.. I added a front disc brake with some help. and everything is smooth riding until I burn a wire. or replace some. I'm sure you'll find some hopelessly lazy and naive Ebikers out there that wouldn't care to check the glove compartment let alone perform regular maintenance checks. If that is the case it's Stewart's responsibility to inform them that their bike is unsuited to be speed modded because of inadequate braking, soft suspension or safety concerns.. If they still insist the onus is on the rider and his obligations should end right there. |

hey all
had to chime in on this one. let me say that i'm by no means a speed demon. i have no real desire to take my e-bike over 32kph. i still own a car and living in the city i can rarely get it over that speed anyhow. i do however feel that it's more than reasonable to be able to do 32kph up a hill with my ebike.. something most stock e-bikes wont do....not to mention that the lack of torque, in my humble opinion, leaves these bikes somewhat vulnerable. it's very hard to maneuver out of a sticky situation. most of my tests with a car and motorcycle cite my average speed on a trip to work as about 24kph so there would be nothing to gain in heavy speed anyhow. understand that the real boost is not in the shunt mod on it's own. that's more of a torque upgrade. i personally had stew do this on my bike and believe it to be much safer now. i can climb a hill at 32 and know that i have enough "go" to avoid a bad situation. ok - i understand that top-speed mod's are being done as well....i think however we're being a bit hard on the kid though. for those of you who have car....do they do more than 100kph? do you ever do 130? is it designed to do that and is that dangerous? is honda guilty of a crime for building them? also - is gm or ford guilty of a crime if you speed? or is it the person with their foot on the pedal. moreover, if i'm in to muscle cars and i have my mustang juiced up to do the quarter mile in 9 seconds, is the act of doing the modification illegal? or is it the act of speeding on the street? we've all seen tv commercials with those high-performance cars on "closed course with pro driver". are they encouraging us to run pylons in the rain? i'd certainly rather be struck by a gio doing 75 than a ford doing 50. and if one does do 75 and the bike flies apart then well - a testament to chinese engineering and a poor decision by the rider. stew is clearly offering to make the bike do something that it's not supposed to do. fair enough. I don't really agree with it either. at least not with doing 75. what he's doing is, in my opinion, jut playing with a few wires. his hand is not on the throttle. I do have a bigger problem with the people riding 75, than i do him. He's just a kid knocking himself out to get through school...and a very bright and hard-working one at that. i'd much rather direct my outrage at big petroleum, insurance and government... the real criminals. just my 2 cent's peace all to_joe P.S. - I can't say how glad I am to see this community developing in to a thriving venue where different attitudes towards this electric vehicle issues can be discussed in a respectful way. |

I want to thank the reasonable people here for backing me up. Two fellows here on this forum (Tom and Joe) who have got these mods done are clearly happy with my service. I don't seem to have a complaint yet, and I think we all know that if I did leave somebody out in the cold, they would be on here shooting me down hard. I am an honest guy, and will be straight up, I don't claim to be able to break the laws of physics (0 range reduction with 73% speed increase), and won't bullshit folks on other aspects either. I started doing this not for money, but for myself, I wanted to make my "vehicle" a legitimate vehicle. By that I mean not having to risk getting doored, or bonked from some schmuck making a right turn. We all know that drivers are unaware of us folk, and what I did minimized the risk. During this time I did car audio installations, and made about the same money as I do now from this(for much easier work). Now that I do these ebikes, I am helping people reduce their risk, and still help pay off (1 step forward 2 steps back
) my excessive student loan. I understand people are going to have issues with it. That is fine, and totally legitimate to have your opinion, if you want to state it feel free, but all I ask is you don't bash me when you've never even met me, or had my services.I think Joe hit it on the head there, smart guy, hard to argue with that eh . Tom and Joe are great guys, not like some of the crazy ebike folk I deal with on a daily basis, and I appreciate their support. To Mike: I understand your issues, fair enough, there are enough scammers out there. To the point about Mr. ScooterBSbooster, I totally agree, that website is full of BS, totally misleading. His prices are pretty outrageous as well. $120 for a shunt mod!!!! (which he says increases top speed??!! WTF). I can promise you I am nothing like that, and will never be. You say you will watch me and make sure I'm not screwing people, feel free, I think you will be pleasantly surprised, no hard feelings. Have a good one and watch for those doors. Stew and others, you should know better.
I provide parts as well as services. I provide convenience and value in mobile services and delivery. People sometimes cannot transport their bikes. Sometimes people buy bikes and need them delivered. I can come help and that`s just what i do. $100-120 depending on distance traveled to deliver and install a brand new controller that has been shunt modded is not a bad deal and is evident by many sales to happy customers. you criticize a fellow escooter rider in the business but do you criticize a plumber or electrician charging you $250+ just to show up at your door??!! i offer many products and services vital to our community out here in Vancouver. You can get drop in lithium manganese LiMN2O4 batteries with chemistry suitable for use even in outer space. read this article by NASA scientists. http://trs-new.jpl.na... It's tried and true even used in most vehicles on our roads. see below ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by mr. scooterboost on Mar 2, 2012 11:52 PM |

???
If you are 'slamming' Stew's work or rates, I wouldn't suggest you continue....or maybe not here at least. AS he now has a FEW customers that use this board and are VERY happy with his work, myself included. But your right, I have to admit you got a sale from me if you can deliver that so called 72-100 v controller that who knows the quality of its components, from all the way in Vancouver (why post here?) then you go right ahead matey...lol For now, all the work on MY bike is done by one and one only, Stewmeista! :) Have a nice day! |

Thanks for the support from my loyal customers.
Here's my problem with you Mr. Scooter Booster: Low quality parts, bad service First of all, the 72v controller you picture can be had for <$40 shipped to your house from china, even in a quantity of one, I can get them for about $20 in a larger quantity, but I don't buy them... Because they are garbage. I am sure you know this, they don't even have regenerative braking at that voltage. If you don't feel safe offering a real warranty on a product, it shouldn't be sold. I had a customer come in just last week, he got a 60v upgrade from you. He has 20Ah batteries, like all medium to large bikes. You sent him a shotty wiring harness, and a 14Ah Battery. So you've effectively limited him to 70% of his original range, but when people try to keep going (because the controller won't cut out at the proper voltage), the battery is run down to 0.00V and gets ruined. You don't provide a 60v charger and wiring adapter, so your customers will have to charge their additional battery with a seperate 12v charger, that's assuming they don't break the battery of course. That is just common sense, the battery capacities have to match or imbalance is imminent. This is one example of many, customers tell me they got screwed on the internet for an upgrade on a weekly basis, the first question I ask is: "Was it Mr Scooterbooster?" I have so many of your customers that come to me after shelling out good money, for so called "Quality Parts", only to find out days or weeks later that their investment was fruitless. It's easy to take money from people with big promises, but if you can't provide the parts and service you promise, your just a crook like any other. My only proof is the mass quantity of your "upgrades" I have replaced. |

stew i`m not criticizing you at all. quit being so sensitive and paranoid. but you can`t help it. i know it is complex you have. it`s called insecurity.
you started bashing my trade. i sell parts. I go install them. I sell scooters and lithium batteries. FYI i do ship 20Ah batteries. maybe the customer ordered a 12ah by mistake. GIO 500w bikes have 12ah batteries. I send a 12v charger with the kit. My kit only costs 120 dollars. You get 95 dollars worth of components. I make 25 dollars for my time. You have a problem with that? I have many customers that tell me they have one bike when i arrive it is some different bike. I don`t have parts for every electric bike in existence do you? i only posted in this toronto forum because i read what someone here who thinks he can slander me said. i`m not doubting what you do is good or bad. i don`t care! i don`t give a crap if you are a electrical engineer. i`m scooter boost not scooter land speed record. if you keep doing what you`re doing and you`re going to get someone killed. please mind your own business. i do. Quit being so nosy and conniving. You are just mad maybe because i`m disrupting your business or maybe because you are broke and i`m kickin` it in Vancouver i`m curious, what is your electric bike service and how much does it cost? what is it exactly that you do to the bike so special? i have a lot of happy customers so i don`t know what your are harping on about. If i ship parts i`m not responsible for the labour. GIO controllers as per their website are 60-70 dollars. I sell them shunt modded for 80 dollars. There is very minimal profit reaped on this so again what is your problem? The 100 volt controller is what i use in conjunction with my 96volt lithium kit bikes. I don`t sell just that controller, I sell it`s installation with lithium kit and brand new bike as a complete unit. Are you concerned a plumber`s cost of a copper pipe is too much for you? get a life! ![]() Edited by mr. scooterboost on Mar 4, 2012 3:17 PM |
