Although Bill 126 has passed and e-bikes are considered permanently legal on Ontario roads, our work is far from done. There are many who are not aware of this law and educating these people in the right way is important. While it is very hard to respond in kind to those that scream out "get off the path" I find keeping your cool and "updating" these people works the best, in some situations. Since the legalization of e-bikes, I have not been on any threads until now. For three years I fought for this great alternative to the automobile and at the end felt drained and ecstatic at the same time. The biggest opposers of course seems to be the cyclists themselves, which has always baffled me. One would think they would be on our side right from the start, since we are replacing automobiles for short commutes not the bicycle itself. I continue to promote scooter style e-bikes at trade shows and special events and because of the volume of people at these events I meet those that embrace e-bikes and those that oppose. I am able to turn some of them around and the others, well...they are stuck with their opinions as we all are some time.
In the meantime, we won and they lost and the law is on our side, so safe riding to all and spread the word. |

Although Bill 126 has passed and e-bikes are considered permanently legal on Ontario roads... ...while the subject of this thread is "Bike path", and as noted in the thread "Don Trails", from Toronto Municipal Code: Chapter 886 FOOTPATHS, PEDESTRIAN WAYS, BICYCLE PATHS AND BICYCLE LANES Definitions B. As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated: BICYCLE — Includes a bicycle, tricycle or other similar vehicle, but does not include any vehicle or bicycle propelled or driven by any power other than muscular power. ARTICLE IV Bicycle Paths C. No person shall park, drive or operate any vehicle, except a bicycle, on a bicycle path. [Amended 2007-12-13 by By-law No. 1367-2007] tks Lock |

I did address "get off the path" mentality and was merely pointing out the "more bees with honey" theory.
My travels do not include bike paths, however certain unused bike paths certainly can safely accomodate transporting many people to work and saving time. If there are laws restricting e-bikes on certain paths, they too can be changed to help reduce congestion on major roadways. |

Lock, I've been using the Don Trail to commute for about a year now, with little problems. I'm under the impression that we're allowed to go wherever bicycles go, as e-bikes are now considered bicycles by Ontario laws. Unless they've created new bylaws since last October that supersede it.

Hey, I've been scooting Park pathways for most of ten years... only got banned once!
![]() Toronto Parks are NOT Ontario roads or sidewalks! Within park boundaries the City is free to make up it's own rules... When Transport Canada decided to test ebikes back in 2000 or so, they asked Quebec and Ontario to let then put ebikes on the road and Ontario refused... so Ontario folks rode ebikes around in Toronto Parks! I am only pointing out watt appears to be the letter of the law... possibly amended in 2007. LocK Edited by lOCk on Apr 4, 2010 2:52 PM |

Interesting comments by all. Since my brother is an importer of these e-bikes the story is all e-bikes which are considered power assisted vehicles are allowed on bike paths if they keep under 20km/hr. They are allowed on roads and bike lanes to their max speed of km/hr. It's up to us to try to encourage municipalities to set aside/build more bike lanes since this seems to be the way to go keeping drivers & other cyclists happy. There should be room for us since we don't pollute!

Lock, I've been using the Don Trail to commute for about a year now, with little problems. So you are a criminal! TORONTO MUNICIPAL CODE PARKS § 608-9 608-9 2009 - 10 - 27 ARTICLE III Parks Use § 608-9. Access. A. Unless authorized by a parks access agreement, no person shall access or occupy a park for non-recreational uses, or to access an adjacent property. ![]() Lock |

...It's up to us... Waaaaah? But that takes WORK?!!! Park lands comprise one-eighth of the land area of the old City of Toronto... Banning ebikes from Toronto Parks sets up significant roadbocks to travels around the city and removes these safe roads and pathways from the enjoyment of ebike riders... the very people Parks administrators should be supporting (if they care about "their" parks environment at all?) Meanwhile they maintain acres of parkland paved as free parking spaces designed to encourage ppl to drive their cars through the City and into our parks... LocK |

Any municipal by-law prohibiting bicycles from highways under their jurisdiction also apply to e-bikes. Municipalities may also pass by-laws specific to e-bikes that prohibit them from municipal roads, sidewalks, bike paths, bike trails, and bike lanes under their jurisdiction.
This is from: http://www.mto.gov.on... the mto website regarding e-bikes. I can try to get some specifics from the City of Ottawa as well, not sure about Toronto. |
