One of my fellow contributors at blogTO just published this piece on cycling and hills in Toronto. We might find it useful to know which hills to avoid:

http://www.blogto.com...

I've taken the one (going downhill) by Hogg's Hollow at Yonge and York Mills. It was a thrill going downhill at 55 km/hr with white knuckles, trigger-fingers on the breaks. :)

Which hills have given you trouble or fun on your eBike?

My hill is on Coxwell heading towards Danforth Avenue on my home from Mobility Unlimited. It goes up a little steep levels off under the railway bridge then goes up steep again to the lights at the top of the hill. It is not hard to get up, but it sucks the life out of my batteries every time.

There is an extremely steep hill on the Grand River Trail in Kitchener between Otttawa St. and Zeller Dr. It's gravel and in the lowest gear on my MTB, standing up on the pedals, the back wheel would just spin in the gravel. I had to dismount and push the bike up the hill. Now, with the BionX I can use the lowest gear, assist level 4, sit back and pedal up with relative ease.

When going back down, I use generation level 4 and both brakes to slowly and safely descend with no white knuckles.

Hi Bill

Just go out Ottawa St N past Lackner, to the end, take the sidewalk (no more Ottawa St, just a sidewalk) to the end. Turn right and follow the gravel road heading downstream. The trail is well marked.

There's a new story on blogTO about bad roads for cyclists. This still very much applies to us. Take a look and comment there as well if you like:

Climbing up the hill going north on Caledonia, just south of Lawrence, was a killer. Had to get off the bike and walk it up the steep hill the remaining 15 meters or so. Even with the momentum of going down the hill leading up to the uphill climb, it was rough. :)

The one at Woodbine heading north on the Danforth. My bike can handle it but you can see the strain on the batteries.. Going down is great though.
