I always was amazed at the huge number of bird houses that are along every road in Grey Bruce Counties. It's all due to years of work by the Sydenham Sportsmen's Association.
http://www.sydenhamsp... As a result of one man, who has spearheaded the design, construction, erection and monitoring of bird houses over the years, there are over 10,000 of them out in the counties. Right behind my house is the Grand River Trail. I hope to spend time during the late fall and winter, building some bird houses from scrap wood, scrounged from new home construction sites. I can use my e-bike along the trail to travel along installing and monitoring the bird houses. It's quick and easy to get up and down the trail this way in very little time. All I'll need for checking the bird houses is a screwdriver to check inside the bird house and perhaps binoculars to watch from a distance. I already have an incredible variety of birds coming to the feeder on my back deck. The e-bike will make this project fun and easy. |

I called an older gentleman, Mr. Lorne Smith, in Owen Sound yesterday. He is the one who has devoted so much time to establishing the bird boxes across Southern Ontario. He's guessing over 12,000 of them are installed.
This is the latest design that has been produced for a number of years now. The different looking entrance is designed to keep raccoons out and to stop cats from getting the birds. He said I could pick up some of them to install along the Grand River Trail behind my home. Another project that he has going are bumble bee nesting boxes. I've never heard of these or seen one. I'm looking forward to meeting him in a few weeks. |
