Toronto & GTA Bicycle helmets, licensing pushed

If cyclists are a city council priority on Toronto's streets, Councillor Michael Walker wants to see those cyclists wearing a helmet and licensed to ride on the road.

Here we go!

It didn't take long for the concept of licensing bikes, e-bikes and anything else on wheels to get the politician's attention.

Bike helmets a 'no-brainer'

-The South Bruce OPP would like to remind cyclists about the requirement to wear a helmet when riding. On Oct. 1, 1995, bike helmets became mandatory for riders under 18 to promote safe cycling.

The set fine for riding without a helmet under 18 is $75. Cyclists over 18 years of age are encouraged to wear helmets for their own safety, but this is not required by law.

Whether biking, skateboarding or rollerblading, adults and youth should obey the rules of the road and wear a properly fitting helmet.

“Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of brain injury by as much as 88 percent,” says Michelle Weinstein, director of prevention programs for the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts. “Plus, today’s helmets are light and can cost as little as $20.”

"A walking helmet is a good helmet"
"Traffic safety isn't just for cyclists. The pedestrians of Denmark actually have a higher risk of head injury. The Danish Road Safety Council recommends walking helmets for pedestrians and other good folk in high risk groups."

Wow, is that for real?

What's next then, a bear-suit?

Hehe... YES you need a bear suit for safety! This video illustrates well the dangers of biking:

As a bear minimum (hehe) elbow pads and knee pads... oh, and for the guys, ya really should wear a jock strap... Ya can't be TOO careful... can ya?

...while my understanding about the pedal-bike helmets w/"features" is that they can catch on the pavement causing more *neck* injuries...

Dunno if you were sporting your "biker" persona in 2001 Joshua but if you had been an attractive young woman your experience w/folks stopping to help might have been different. Myself, I carry a large pack of counterfeit $20 bills to scatter across the road if I EVer need to stop traffic...
