Interesting Math Regarding Scooter Vs Public Transit

In total this equates to £2,538 for the first three years - almost half I'd be paying with public transport. Treat the bike to its regular services and it will last much longer than the finance agreement.

The woman who wrote this article bases her calculations on a commute of 26 miles or 41.83 km. I sure wish she had done her calculations using an e-bike instead of a gas powered Vespa. The e-bike would come out far cheaper than the Vespa. but, I think that the e-bikes are limited over there to a max of 12.43 mph or 20 km/hr vs the Vespa's top speed of 70 mph or almost 113 km/hr.

She says it takes her 40 to 45 minutes to do a 26 mile commute. This means she is averaging about 35 to 39 mph. 56.33 to 62.76 km/hr. Therefore the trip would maybe take about 3 times as long with an e-bike and about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour longer than if she took the public transit.

The cost of purchasing and running an e-bike would be less than 1/4 the cost of the scooter so I guess the main decision to be made is which is the most important, time or money?

My first electric scooter cost me $500 second-hand...

It paid for itself that first summer, when I stopped buying monthly Metropasses.

...overlooking completely the entertainment value of the scoot of course.

Over most of ten years I have never paid a penny for electricity for my scoots. The cost has always been paid by landlords, clients, friends, restaurants, Parks Department, etc... (it's a long list)

In terms of Toronto you are looking at being able to ride 7-8 months out of the year, more if you're insane. For the average person they will probably ride 7 (this of course can change depending on crazy weather)

4 months of ttc sticking to tokens to get to and from work 5 days a week works out to roughly 400 bucks a year compared to 1200 by taking the ttc

Looking at 3 years (this cost is based on the bike and maintenance that it will need over 3 years)

Cost of e-bike and maintenance over the 3 years $2600 plus ttc $1200 give you a grand total of $3800.
Cost of ttc for 3 years $3600 (that is if token prices remain the same but if not it'll cost more)

Now for the cheap minded this cost can be cut down. The savings will be different for everyone but even if you break even its far better to not be dependent on the ttc for the majority of the year.

Having said this, I would *love* to be able to lease my scoots from the TTC... say $50 a month for all-ya-can-eat including preventative maintenance. Prompt roadside assistance a small extra. Pack swaps at any subway station a small extra...

No up-front capital cost, no more worries about maintenance or dying packs...

Sign me up.

I like the models they use for these things. I doubt anyone would ever see that woman on an electric scooter LOL.
