Scoot out of city streets
Last week on the way home, several of the neighborhood children were out playing in the street. Some were playing basketball, several were on bikes and one little girl about 12 years old was riding a motorized scooter http://www.suburbanch... It's time the police started handing out tickets to ALL vehicle operators regardless of age. There is no need to pass additional legislation if the present laws are not going to be enforced. My rebuttal:
Actually, when the US CPSC looked at hospital admissions when they noticed young people having (non-motorized) kick scooter injuries, their findings were that the scooter kids were having half as many accidents as their classmates that were riding pedal bikes, and the scooter injuries were much less severe... and it is not hard to pedal a bike to 15mph... Probably the girl on the scoot was safer than if she were on a pedal bike. Or do you advocate banning pedal bikes also? tks |

I looked up the scooter the child was zipping around on and the description stated that has "a high-performance motor, suspension, and speeds of up to 15 mph, and can go up to 10 miles without a charge The scooters I found that were rated at 15 mph and a 10 mile range were not kick scooters. http://www.scootergur... I agree with lOCk that scooters are safer than bikes. Even a Vespa is safer than a motorcycle. I believe that it's because the rider does not have a metal frame that their legs are straddled over. When there is an accident and the rider goes down, there is less chance of having a leg pinned underneath. The result is much less severe injuries for the scooter rider. When I was a student at U of T, I was driving a Vespa scooter. A car decided to make a right turn from the left turn lane and across 2 lanes of traffic. The driver did not see me approaching in the right hand lane from behind. The car had to be hoisted off of the scooter by a tow truck. I went over the car and despite a few scuff marks to my clothing and a severely cracked helmet, I only suffered a bruise to the back of one hand. The driver was charged and since this was before "no fault", the car owner's insurance company paid all of my expenses. I feel that I would have not been so lucky if I had been on a normal motorcycle. I also feel that since this accident occurred during my skydiving days, that my parachute landing practice skills helped to prevent more serious injuries. Edited by Bbbashful on Sep 25, 2009 6:41 AM |
