Thanks for the stats Eric, seems to me that those costs will be prohibitive, if you factor that getting the licensing etc is also several hundreds of dollars, and it bothers me still that the bike will not be able to go the speed of traffic. I agree that it is less prohibitive at that point to purchase a gas scooter, and hope that I could sell my ebike that only has 350 km on it to someone in a province that is more accepting :)

Hopefully this will not come to pass however and hopefully at least the pilot project will be extended. I can't see that they would suddenly come up with new legislation in the next two weeks...

Does anyone know who we can ask? is this something to bug our MPP's about? andrea

Now the things that I like about the EVT
1 - Runs almost totally silent
2- Has excellent excelleration
3- Is a well built bike (believe me, when you ride at speeds of 60 to 65k you need a properly built bike -- most e-bikes would not be able to handle it)
4 - zero carbon emissions (please note that I am not factoring in carbon emissions during the manufacturing process, or the source of the plug-in electricity)

5-No fluids to leak out onto our pavements to be washed down into the sewers and so into our drinking water.

6- Perhaps twice as energy efficient as the reciprocating exploding infernal combustion engine that relies on (heavily taxed and subsidized) hydrocarbons for its energy source, versus the EVT which can draw it's energy from many sources including wind, solar, hydro, nuclear and geothermal...

ps... OK, that's 6) and 7) biggrin

I personally think they will either extended the pilot or hopefully make them officially legal. I do however think they should all have a standard plate saying it's an ebike. Not everyone has one yet. I think it would help avoid confusion from motorists. I personally don't have one yet myself. And helmet use should be strictly enforced.

Eric
Where can you pick up one of those EVT in Toronto? What is the range that one can expect from it and do you have to lug the battery out and charge everywhere you go (i.e. to work) or can you just charge once a day? Does it use the same Lead - acid battery?

I purchased my EVT 168 through Go-Green E-Cycle http://www.gogreenecy... which is located in St. Catharines. The gentleman who runs G0-Green is a great guy (his name is Joe) and he even delivered the EVT to me here in Toronto.

I purchased the EVT with the Lead Acid batteries (it has 4 batteries which you would not be removing easily) and found that I could travel up to 45 to 50 km comfortably under real world driving conditions (stop and go, average speed of 55k). But as the case with Lead Acid batt's it is best to not leave them discharged so I always recharged right away. I have travelled already 2,500 km with those batt's. I am now making arrangements to upgrade to a Lithium battery pack, and please note that you can purchase the EVT with the lithium packs already installed with a new controller. But of course the cost will be higher than the lead acid version.

PS... Please note that there is another tread where Loc has provided a lot of great info on battery types and spec's............................................

Thank you so much for the info. These look interesting though i'd probably go with Lithium batteries as it would be a pain to charge.

Maybe... from that page:
"Any municipal by-law prohibiting bicycles from highways under their jurisdiction also apply to e-bikes. Municipalities may also pass by-laws specific to e-bikes that prohibit them from municipal roads, sidewalks, bike paths, bike trails, and bike lanes under their jurisdiction. "

So the City is not prevented from doing something dumb...

When the Toronto Cyclist Union issues a statement that they support ebikes and ebikes in the bike lanes and park pathways, I'll feel more relaxed...

Yeah!! that is good news. I guess they still need to have a clause, but I can't see that individual cities are going to ban e-bikes. I guess they may get sticky on multi-use paths or something, but hopefully not!! I wonder how much my bike weighs? I can just see the cops having portable scales to make us ride over!! a
