I have good news!

I contacted the dealer I got my bike from and they enlightened me on the battery system my bike has. Motorino is in fact not cheap like Daymak. They do not use a switch for the power. When the second battery pack is plugged in the motor draws equal power from both so it isn't hauling a battery that is not being used. There is actually a cord in the bucket underneath the seat to plug the an additional battery, (the one I will get in the spring is the 48V 14AH). To charge both batteries I use the one port that is used to charge the main battery so I don't even need an additional charger.

They were able to confirm that over all performance is increased a fair bit and the range is increased to 80-90km :)

So glad I went with Motorino.

Ok my mistake then on guessing they use the same system as the Daymak. I have seen the Daymak dual battery E-Bike in person. But I have never seen a Motorino except on the web. I assumed they used the same system. But how do they prevent the larger battery from discharging into the smaller pack?

I solved my overheating diodes problem!! Yeah

All I did was solder on 4 more diodes in parallel for a total of 6 paralleled diodes. I rode home today (about 23km) all the way at WOT and then examined the electrical tape the diodes are wrapped in. Absolutely no deformation or evidence of any heating at all. Problem solved. Now I can just set back and use and enjoy the performance increase and the extra range as well from this extra battery pack.

No worries man. There aren't any Motorino dealers in Toronto so the bikes aren't that common here. I'm just learning myself.

Below is what the specs say about the battery. I could call on Monday and ask about the power leakage to see if it does or not. If it does what impact would it have?

# Battery - 48V 20AH SLAVR and 48V/14AH*
# Battery capacity: 1056Wh/1768Wh*
# Battery protection: Low voltage cut off protection
# Charger: 3A input AC 100 - 240V, output DC 53V
# Charging: on board parallel or off board

Regarding the additional battery pack on the Motorino, is there any way to check and see (either thru the dealer or just by inspecting) if it has any diodes or other stuff between the two parallel connections between the 20ah pack and the 14ah pack?

Just curious as I am thinking of doing something like that on my Volare and I have had some opinions that this is not needed and others of course that say it is for sure. Just wondering how Motorino does it.

Whatever I do will be in the Spring as well.

I'll pull of some panelling and have a look if I can. Will keep you posted. I am betting it does have diodes but would like to confirm for sure.

Hey Fred,

Spoke to the manufacturer of my bike and there were able to confirm there is in fact no leakage of power form one battery to the other. They explained because its a parallel board and power is drawn form both batteries at the same time it won't occur. They have diodes.

I hope that helps!

Well it sounds like my experiment was just a recreation of Motorino's design without knowing I was. I hope they do not try and sue me for patent infringement!! Well if that is their design then it is a good system. Ever since I solved my overheating diodes problem my dual battery pack system has been working flawlessly.

That's awesome Ken. Excellent work. I don't think you would have to worry about anyone suing ya haha. The system you designed sounds pretty awesome. Not just anyone is capable of that, so really KUDOS to ya. I'm def impressed

Thanks for the compliments. When you upgrade next spring let me know how it works out for you, I would be interested in hearing.
