Can you legally have a passenger on an e-scooter? The combine weight will be less than the carrying capacity of the bike and the bike itself have a seat built for 2.

I'm really wondering this myself. Documentation that I've read seems to state that passengers are not allowed on e-bikes, although the former definition of an e-bike was the bicycle-style models. My Condor has space for a passenger, and I've been wondering if it's legal to carry one-- but at the same time, I'm certain that it wouldn't support the combined weight (I weigh just over 230lbs myself) and even if it did, the decrease in speed and range would suck.

I've been told by at least one person that passengers are legally allowed as long as the bike has a "rear" seat and foot-rests, and in some cases a handlebar of sorts. And the majority of scooter-style e-bikes I've been looking at seem to have this.

I've given my girlfriend a ride on many an occasion. Our combined weight is about 265 lbs, well under the maximum capacity (I believe is 330 lbs or 150 kg). Aside from slightly slower starts, it's been pretty much the same driving experience. I've never been given a hassle by any cop either. So long as she's wearing a helmet, they needn't waste their time.

Yes you can.

As you will see at the e-bike law faq you are allowed a passenger provided the seat is built for 2.

Personally I see next to no performance issues when I bring my fiance' on the bike with me. I'm 235 lbs, she's 145 and the bike handles/performances very well.

I'll be adding a battery in the spring since my bike allwos two batteries to be used at the same time. No switch bull like in cheap bikes. Once we have the battery it should perform even better. Currently the speed just gets reduced by 5km/hr.

14. Am I allowed to carry passengers on my e-bike?

Under the Highway Traffic Act, section 178(2), passengers are not allowed on a bicycle designed for one person.

I love how they specifically don't state that passengers are allowed on bikes (scooters) with a 2-person seat. Granted, reading the above I would certainly assume that is implied... But one could surmise that this was intentionally left vague, to allow for future legal debate...

So with the Condor's stated 330lb carrying weight limit, I'm still not sure I'd want to chance it; first the risk of damage to the bike, and secondly the additional strain on the battery. Maybe if I were to add the secondary battery as Ken has, or find a LiFePO4 solution that's affordable. I wonder how an equivalent LiFePO4 setup would perform, in place of the SLA batteries? I'd love to load up the bike with a 48V/30Ah or so pack, and take advantage of the better range and acceleration. Heh, I bet the charge time would suck, though. (And the cost!)

Thanks for this info! I saw someone ride down my street with a passenger just the other day.
My bike looks like it is built for two with extra foot rest so I'll try it out.
