Well dry salt is fine. It is when salt is mixed with slush water and it is very cold out that is when the damage occurs.
I am used to riding in cold weather so it does not really bother me. And my batteries are holding up fine even in -10 or lower weather, they still have enough capacity to commute to and from work, which is all I want the bike to do for me anyways. Every day I ride I save money by not having to pay TTC fair which will be going up to $3.00 per ticket or token in January. Ken Finch Edited by Ken Finch on Dec 23, 2009 8:20 PM |

Très cool, lOCk. Helmet cam? What's your rig?
I want to do something like this on my e-bike through the Don Trail when the weather's nicer. |

Hi Roger
Not my vid! But the guys riding a BionX rig and the cam is a GoPro... http://www.goprocamer... I believe you can spend a lot less on a wearable cam but I've seen other vids from GoPro cams and they do all seem top quality. It's been a while since I've riden in some inches of snow. I'd forgotten one thing that the rider commented on (elsewhere) about how the bike can get "trapped" in existing ruts/car tracks... Generally it's like lots of situations I guess where ya just have to adjust riding style for the conditions eg slow down! Twelve weeks from now it'll be April ![]() cheers Lock |

OK, wrong time of year for winter riding vids, so maybe save this vid for the first stinkin'hot muggy Toronto summer day:
"500W E-Bike kit from Cyclone-tw.com and 24V 20Ah LiFePO4 battery from PingBattery.com installed on MTB XC Hardtail" (Interesting to note that this rider has a 24V 20Ah PING pack hooked up to a 500W motor!) Lock |

Just an FYI for all of us Southern Ontarians: Studs are only legal in Ontario if you live north of Perry Sound, and only from October 1 to April 30 inclusive.

I don't trust the MTO site... prefer the actual legislation:
Highway Traffic Act R.R.O. 1990, REGULATION 625 TIRE STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS http://www.e-laws.gov... ...and yah, it says 9. (1) No person shall operate a vehicle equipped with studded tires on a highway unless all of the following conditions are met: ...but at a quick google there are lots of Toronto cyclists asking about this and many riding studded tires and some like and some don't but the point is nobuddy mentions being bothered by Toronto police about studded tires on their bike. Mountain Equipment Co-op and other stores sell studded tires. I'm gonna suggest our police don't care about studs on tiny vehicles... only cars and trucks. And most police officers would not tell you to remove the studs if they think the studs make your winter bike riding safer. I'm thinkin' these "scooter" tires might fit some scooter-style ebikes: http://www.schwalbeti... ![]() I have a cast front wheel and disk brake so wanna try wrapping the tire with stainless steel stranded wire... we'll see. OK, wrong time of year for winter riding vids, so maybe save this vid for the first stinkin'hot muggy Toronto summer day: Winter already? But we haven't finished summer! Interesting video, and shows why I don't ride on trails or pedestrian paths -- for such a pedestrian-heavy path, this guy was gunning it all the way. He/she came up fast on many-a-skiier, blasted his horn (not a friendly little "toot toot" but actually sat on the horn) and almost took out a cute little black dog, a couple that weren't even moving (they were off to the side), and many others that were on the trail. As the video progressed, I was just waiting for this ebiker to wipe out, taking with him some hapless person or people. Cool video showing what can be done with some spikes and snow. But a dangerous rider which I'd not want to encounter while I was cross country skiing. |

Lock, the law you quote makes reference to 'highways'. Are studded tires indeed restricted only on highways, or is 'highway' defined here to broadly include all roads and streets?
