Nice blog Roger. I see that it has also ignited the same old debate about ebikes in bike lanes.
It's funny how they are so concerned about slow ebikes and not the cars/SUV's pooping in the
air, speeding through city streets killing and crippling cyclists.

Joshua,

Can you post a link to that Q & A?

Also the pedal style ebikes (at least the factory made ones) are limited to the same speed. The motor stops assisting when you reach a certain speed. So this would be incredibly stupid for both styles!

Thanks,
Vic

Yes link please. I know they are not allowed in Parks or Trails, that got changed a while ago. But bike lanes I thought hadn't changed.

Regardless of what the bike path law says, the ultimate answer to ebikes vs ebikes which are scooter-styled, is to have more diamond lanes in Toronto -- which clearly are for all greener modes of travel via the signage on 'em -- they are for buses, taxis, motorcycles and bicycles (as well as for cars with three or more persons).

I love the diamond lanes near me along Don Mills Road -- aside from the occasional bus or cab, it's like my own private bike lane.

If the City of Toronto politicians spent less time worrying about how quiet our ebikes were, and more on reducing gridlock, commute times, and smog, they'd realize that the answer is easy and economical -- more diamond lanes.

Just my Twoonie's worth of thought.

I stick to routes with bus lanes and bike lanes. Makes life much easier on these kinda bikes ;)
