************************************** City of Toronto City Clerk's Office Attention: Merle MacDonald, Administrator, Planning and Growth Management Committee Toronto City Hall 100 Queen Street West 10th Floor, West Tower Toronto, ON M5H 2N2 Fax: 416-392-1879 e-mail: pgmc@toronto.ca Dear Planning and Growth Management Committee Kudos on your efforts in bringing our City Zoning By-law up to date. Specifically with regards to your inclusion of bicycle parking spaces at many commercial etc buildings. In these days with concerns about global climate change and pollution and energy waste and traffic congestion and obesity these little vehicles can help address all these concerns and more. I am only writing you to ask that you consider one aspect of the bicycle parking that perhaps has been overlooked. We are in the early days of a transportation revolution in Toronto. Our medias are full of positive words about the adoption of battery electric cars, but they are overlooking the real success story for electric vehicles and this is the success of electric bicycles. Sales of these tiny vehicles in Toronto and around the world have been skyrocketing! One in every eight new bicycles sold today in Holland has power-assist. There are dozens of retailers in Toronto now selling power-assist bikes, and thousands of these vehicles already on Toronto roads. For many people and for many reasons power-assist makes two wheels a more practical vehicle than the pedal-only bike, and every trip made by ebike instead of in four wheels is a “win” for Toronto's congested roads etc. I speak from some experience as I have been riding power-assisted bikes around Toronto for ten years now, well over 20,000kms of urban commutes, summers and winters. One thing that ebike riders appreciate is the chance to “opportunity charge” in their travels. At their workplace but also at any restaurants and retail establishments etc. An electrical outlet adjacent to any bicycle parking area is a major attraction for ebikers! Toronto was very forward looking a few years ago when it revised it's Parking By-laws to permit free parking for motorcyclists. It had another opportunity today to encourage ebikes in the same way. I draw your attention to recent moves at the City of Vancouver, where they are to implement parking and infrastructure rules that promote both motorcycling AND electric bikes... a recent Memorandum here: http://ftp.vancouver.... That's all! Thank you for your time Regards |
