Well, I got a new battery for the ebike. Have it for about 2 or 3 weeks. Rode the bike a few kilometers and it totally died going up a hill. The battery level was fine, it was about 50% if not 65%. I had to pedal it home, and then I put it on the charger for about 3 hours or so. Charger said it was done charging so I tried starting it up. Lights, horn, signals work fine, no throttle. I checked all connectors and everything seem to be just fine.
Any assistance would be appreciated. I would hate to have it be the battery that I just purchased. |

Lights, horn, signals work fine, no throttle. And it could just be a bad/broken throttle... Chances are it's a cheapy "pot" (potentiometer - variable carbon resistor) and not a modern (more expensive but much more reliable) hall throttle... Likely there's a plug somewhere in the wire `tween throttle and controller. I'd disconnect the plug and try shorting the connector pins on the controller end of the wire (it's a low voltage circuit - not pack voltage!) If that makes the motor kick then I would suspect the throttle pot. Lock Edited by lOCk on Jun 19, 2010 12:17 AM |

Having said this... BE CAREFUL if your throttle has any sort of pack voltage indicator built in... LED lights or wattever, as this means there actually IS pack voltage wired to the throttle... several wires bundled together to the throttle. The pack voltage wires would be bigger than the wires to the actual throttle control and there may actually be two separate plugs in the wiring between the throttle control and the controller or pack. Only play with the small, thinnest wires as they'll be the low voltage (safe) control circuit!

Lock,
Thanks for pointing that out. I read through that one so fast that I missed half of it, lol. Either defective throttle like you said or the throttle cable came lose somewhere. A bump might have made it come lose if it wasn't connected properly. -Vic Edited by Vic on Jun 19, 2010 12:45 AM |

I think the battery is fine. It happened while going uphill. Patrick was it a really steep hill?
We need Ken's help. Ken if you read this, judging by Patrick's message do you think that maybe the motor burned out? |

Yup it looks like that but that's the 2009/10 moidel, mine's the 2008 model.
Electro Wheels makes it. I'm not handy when it comes to this stuff. The hill I was going up, I've never had any problems with before, ever. It would slow down to maybe 20 km/h or 10 depending on how charged the battery is. Even when the battery is low, it allowed me to get some power to throttle, but it didn't even do any of that. |

Is it something I can fix on my own? Or do you suggest I take it in to a mechanic/bike shop? I don't have a voltage meter unfortnately, so i can't check anything out. I did notice however the right brake isn't working all that great, not even sure how to adjust it.

If your bike has a kill switch for the motor by using the brake handle, it is also possible that is your problem. Quite often in your situation it is also the throttle as has been mentioned. Fortunately 9 out of 10 times your problem is a very inexpensive one.

Good thought about the brake kill switch!

Six bux plus shipping from ebay Patrick http://cgi.ebay.ca/NE... Re the brake, assuming a mechanical brake with classic wire cable? There's always stretch... Gotta be a adjustment there somewhere. Either at the handle end or brake end but probably both. l0Ck |
