wish i can just go to a tech shop and pay and get a good job do to my ride sad as i
Basically ya have the wrong vehicle for mod'ing *at this point in time*...

The hobby folks will talk yer head off about motors and controllers and batts as used on converted pedal bikes but they`re not too interested in or familiar with the scooter-style ebikes. And the scooter-style retailers pretty much only know how to swap components supplied by the original supplier...

Yep E-Scooters a friggin mystery to me as well

Last night I thought about getting a wrecked Veloteq and swapping out the power plant for a 750W hub motor with a 48A X 72V Controller but then I realized that the way my mind works I'd likely be passing all the cars on the 401 except the ones with flashing red roof lights.

This thing about E-Scooters being allowed to carry a Passenger Legally has really got me thinking (not always a good thing btw)

E-Scooters have a Weight restriction under the MOT Guidelines and the E-Scooters tend to restrict Rider weight to 300 to 350 lbs.

So what about getting all the battery weight off the E-Scooter and into a small Cargo Trailer.

Using a Trailer you could double or triple your Range by adding more batteries i.e. use a 48V X 20Ah Pack for short trips, add another 48V X 20Ah to double your range and for long rides add a 3rd pack.

Plus using a Trailer you are no longer limited to SLA and if the Battery chemistry is prone to fire/explosion it won't be under yer ass but away from the E-Scooter in a Trailer.

Another Bonus is getting the heavy SLA off the E-Scooter means you can safely add the weight of a Passenger.

Under opening a Can of Worms

In the USA with their 750W Motor limit. Someone asked back about 2002 what if the bike carried a Passenger would the Motor still be 750W and the government reply was 750W for the Primary Rider and 1/2 that for the Passenger = 375W for a Total of 1,125W

If Ontario is 500W for the Primary, then if you added a Passenger wouldn't that Passenger add 50% or 250W for a 750W Total??

Re gas scooters, any links to this weight restriction? It's just that the Ontario act and regulations do not use the word "scooter"... I can't see where they are defined as anything different than motorcycles.

And there is no restriction in the legislation limiting the weight of a pedal-assisted bicycle. Post a link please? To the LAW I mean... not some bureaucrats interpretation.

Re 500W/750W for two. Canadian and Ontario laws are not written this way. The 500W power limit is per vehicle, not per rider.

Thanks Vic... I see that, I just don't see any mention of it in any actual legislation... MTO staff have been known to embellish in the past also...

Ok now I get what you're saying. I haven't found anything in the HTA either. But I'll look some more and if I find anything I'd post a link.

Hey Wanye,

When the ministry originally drafted this law it was meant for peddle style ebikes not our scooters. Which seems to have taken the law makers by surprise.

That's the second of two options... choices are:
...has one of the following safety features,
(i) an enabling mechanism to turn the electric motor on and off that is separate from the accelerator controller and fitted in such a manner that it is operable by the driver, or
(ii) a mechanism that prevents the motor from being engaged before the bicycle attains a speed of 3 km/h

You have the first option... a key switch that turns the vehicle off... correct?
smile

I actually like the second option as a safety feature and an energy saving feature, and at some point will upgrade to a controller that has this as an option.
